Firm Relocations, Commuting and Relationship Stability

In this paper, we study the impact of firm relocations on commuting distance and probability married couples cohabiting with children separating. We use Swedish register data for 2010-2016 select employees relocating firms one workplace more than 10 employees. Focusing sample allows us to plausibly exogenous variation in arising from relocation. extend literature effect relationship stability by reducing possibility unobserved time-variant factors bias our estimates. While previous has focused difference between short- long-distance commuting, focus changes that are externally induced management. find a small but statistically significant negative increased relocation family stability. A km change leads 0.09 percentage point higher separation if commuter remains next 5 years.
